Prop Firm Rules: News, EA, Copy Trading and Weekend Holds

News, EA, copy-trading and weekend-holding rules in prop trading do not have one universal answer. The same firm may apply different conditions by model, phase, account and effective date. Treat them as contractual conditions: read the rules for the account you bought, save the URL and date, and ask support in writing where the definition is unclear.

News trading: what to verify

Do not ask only “is news trading allowed?” Identify the official calendar, which events are restricted, affected instruments, the pre/post-event window, whether opening, closing or both are restricted, and how evaluation differs from funded/Master stages. Some rules allow holding but restrict trade actions near an event; some models differ.

EAs and automation

An EA is not automatically permitted because the platform supports it. Check whether its logic creates prohibited behaviour, rapid order activity, latency exploitation, signal copying or unusual feeds. You remain responsible for every order the EA places, including during connectivity problems or incorrect settings.

Copy trading

Copying can mean copying between your own accounts, another person, a signal service or a trade copier. Terms may allow one form and prohibit another. Ask whether source and destination have the same owner, whether the strategy must be independent, whether IP/device limits apply and whether the setup produces matching orders across accounts.

Weekend holding

Weekend positions can face gaps, wider spreads, swaps or automatic closure. Conditions vary by product and stage; FundingPips, for example, has published temporary Master-account changes for some models. Never assume an evaluation rule is the funded-stage rule.

Five steps before Buy or Sell

  1. Record the model, stage and current rules URL in your journal.
  2. Set alerts for events affecting held instruments.
  3. Test EAs/copying on demo or low-risk conditions first.
  4. Reduce or close exposure before a cutoff if the rule is unclear.
  5. Save support responses about exceptions or published changes.
